here's to being lost and found
i've attended countless gigs pero hanggang ngayon hindi ko pa rin napapanood ng live ang sugarfree. still itching for that first and i hope it would be something extra special like rockestra.
hindi ko trip yung kantang "hari ng sablay". siguro dahil na rin lang sa pag overplay nito sa mga istasyon ng radyo na hindi mga kagaya ko ang tina-target na audience.
kung pa-cool ako gaya ng iba siguro inayawan ko na ang sugarfree dahil dun. pero hindi ako ganun ka babaw. i wouldn't let just one song ruin my view on a band that has been consecutively releasing tons of good products.
well nung una, para sa kin, yang sugarfree ay isa lang sa mga average bands na naiwan after nung eheads break up. nagustuhan ko yung "burnout" at "mariposa" which both came from "sa wakas" but i never took the time to look deeper into the band and its other songs.
a few years later lumabas yung "dramachine". that was the same period when i realized that this band was way, way beyond being an average combo. eventually i became a heavy listener. nakakamangha ang pagka-genius ni ebe sa pagsusulat, gusto ko na maging katulad niya. i never thought that simple and honest words could pierce me THAT way. sabi nga nila simplicity kills. gustong gusto ko yung mga kanta, it felt like they were songs engineered and custom made for me. i mean, almost all of them songs parang mga experiences ko sa buhay. kahit nga yung kinaaayawan kong "hari ng sablay" akong ako.
2 years ago lumabas yung "tala-arawan", yan yung latest... and their greatest, well at least for me. it was even made simplier than the previous release. walang gadget-gadget na ginamit sa gitara gaya ng "dramachine". kung ano ang tunog na lalabas sa amp nila yun na. good thing about this album is walang decline pagdating sa song quality hence it was even intensified a couple of notches up. ebe was consistent in writing superb honest songs. and again they were like songs about me, or songs about "us" true blue average pinoys. plain simple magic, yung thoughts na mahirap i-explain naipaliwanag niya ng husto using the simpliest words and friendliest melodies. the whole album itself is a recollection of thoughts making it very intimate for the listeners. parang diary na nakakarelate kang basahin. saktong sakto pa nga yung title, "tala-arawan".
of all their albums "tala-arawan" is my favorite. i have my own copy for more than a year already and up until now i can still put it in the player and set it on infinite repeat.
sugarfree has this effective formula, all they do is they keep their songs simple and clean so everyone can feel what they're trying to say. they didn't even bother writing it in english. parang weird pa nga pag naririnig ko yung iilang mga kanta nilang ingles.

circa 1995: reason to beleive
may naging basketball career din ako dati kahit papaano, tingnan niyo.
long, long ago, in a galaxy far, far away nakasama ako sa basketball team ng school namin para lumaban sa mga pambato ng ibang eskwelahan sa bansa natin. small basketeers philippines yung ligang iyon. and in a nationwide scale malayo rin ang naabot namin, we won each of our games in the northern luzon division.
during the luzon leg natalo namin yung liseo de cabuyao. pagkatapos nun nilampaso kami ng don bosco pampanga which eventually became luzon champions that year.
sa totoo lang parang saling ketket ako sa team na yan, for the whole season nakapag-contribute ako ng a total of 6 points. kung ten games yun wala pa sa 1 point per game ang average ko. oha!
pero eto, kahit pang bano ang stats ko isa pa rin yang experience na yan sa highest highs ng buhay ko. this was one of the few times kung saan nagawa ko yung gusto gawin at abutin kahit na subok lang. bihira yung ganon, pramis. sa totoo lang, feeling ko, madalas isa akong free soul confined by society in a box. yung tipong may gagawin ka pa lang or may susubukan ka pa lang isang damukal na discouragement na ang matatanggap mo. wala pang nangyayari sasabihin agad sa iyo na "hindi yan para sa yo, hanggang dito ka lang". bulkrap.
anyways, thankful pa rin ako kay coach namin for making things possible and teaching us a thing or two about giving chances, yun yun eh! san na kaya yun?

a happy videoke night with a few rounds of liquor and lots of food.
started the night with cool and up to date songs. then not so recent songs. next yung outdated songs but were cool at least with in the last 5 years. at natapos sa ballads.
iisa lang yung mic kaya medyo nagkakaswapangan pa nung una. then the group decided to do it "k! the 1 million peso videoke challenge" style. input ng kantang pamilyar sa lahat tapos pasahan ng mikropono, sa ganong paraan walang lugi. nakakatuwa pa. lalo na nung sa "alapaap", tagiisa kaming "gusto mo pa ba?" sa coda at nung natapos na sa "sumama?" nag-standing ovation kaming anim sa sobrang galak.

and one thing i want to share. don't throw away your backlog/tapon pictures. madaming gamit yan, kumbaga scratch paper na pwedeng pag-practice-an. at kung minsan masu-surprise ka na lang na ang iba mong kuha dati ay actually good pictures. yun lang.

ayun, nag-send ako ng distress signal sa world wide web na kung mero bang mga kabitenyong lonely rin ang kanilang buhay photography at pwedeng makasama mag-shoot paminsan-minsan. and after a few minutes messages came flooding in my multiply inbox. you'll be surprised minsan kung gano ka-powerful ang internet. napansin ko na rin yun dati eh, na lahat ng bagay kayang hanapin sa net basta alam mo lang kung san ka maghahalungkat.
we decided to meet kaninang umaga.
so i got more than what i expected at ang naging resulta ay ang grupong ito with more than 20 members and counting. yey!

(1) jeff buckley songs are so relaxing. maghahanap ako ng cd niya, sana meron sa music1.
(2) "infernal affairs" is my current favorite movie. wala na akong balak panoorin yung american adaptation nito na "the departed" at baka ma-disappoint lang ako. para sa kin kase asian scripts are definitely better than western ones. can't wait to watch "infernal affairs 2 & 3". hmmmm, maybe one of these week nights.

'di ako fanatic ng anime though may ilan rin mga series akong sinundan religiously nung highschool at college ako. this means na kapag pumunta ako sa isang cosplay event most of the time hindi ako makaka-relate. unless na lang siguro kapag galing sa final fantasy or anime na sikat nung late 90's/early 2000's ang pino-portray ng isang cosplayer.
